When you think about something you want to be, do or have, what thoughts come to mind? Stop and take a moment to really think about this. Be honest with yourself.
Do you begin to hear the words or phrases, "If I had...", "I can't because...", "But", "I'll do it when...", "Someday I'll...", or "Once ____ happens then I'll be, do or have it"?
All of these words and phrases are defeating you before you even begin. You want something and then you immediately tell yourself all of the reasons why you can't. You are affirming and denying what you want at the same time with your self-talk. It's like pressing the up and down button on an elevator simultaneously.
When you make these statements to yourself, even though nobody hears them, your subconscious does. Maybe you're not familiar with the term subconscious, but think of it as your heart or your soul.
Whenever you think a negative, destructive, or limiting thought, you are teaching yourself to accept those thoughts. Your subconscious (heart) takes what you tell it as truth.
We can use our conscious mind (the thinking mind) to stop and prevent these negative, destructive and limiting thoughts from entering our subconscious before they can reach it.
The conscious mind, which acts as "the guardian at the gate", is there to protect us from allowing any unwanted or destructive thoughts from getting in.
The good news is that the conscious mind can be strengthened and fortified through training, repetition and perseverance. This is referred to as mental stamina, mental toughness or mental fortitude.
The way to eliminate negative, destructive and limiting thoughts is to fill our minds with positive, constructive, empowering, life-enhancing thoughts.
In this process we don't focus on the elimination of the negative, rather, we crowd it out by filling it with the positive, constructive, life-giving thoughts.
Remember, whatever we focus on gets magnified. So if you focus on getting rid of the negative, that's where your focus will be, on the negative, and that is what you'll attract to you.
Conversely, by focusing on what's good, the positive, the constructive, we enhance it and attract more of it into our lives.
This is the "HOW" of changing your mindset, eliminating destructive thoughts and beliefs, and creating the life that you desire.
Is it a simple concept? Yes.
Is it easy? Not at first but it becomes easier and easier as you exercise and discipline your mind, just as the athlete conditions his or her body.
Armed with the knowledge that your subconscious is susceptible to influence from the thoughts that you are repeatedly giving it, you have the understanding and power to begin right now to choose whatever thoughts you want, to feel the way you want to feel, and to consciously create the life in which you truly desire.
With this awareness, you will be very selective about what you choose to allow to enter your mind. This isn't blind ignorance. You are still aware of all of the things going on in the world around you but you are choosing not to focus and dwell on them and make them a larger part of your being.
You CAN be, do or have anything in which you truly desire and it all begins with your dominant state of consciousness, your awareness.
