Resistance

Updated: May 10, 2023

Whenever we set out to do something, there is usually some resistance. This resistance may be what’s preventing you from accomplishing your goals and doing what you really love to do.

Recognition of our resistance is the first step in the process of change. Once we identify when or for what reason we are resisting, we can then begin a course of action to change our behaviors and start experiencing results.

So let me ask you the question, “Where does your resistance originate from?” Really think about this. Only YOU know the true answer to this question.

Here are a few common reasons why people do what they do and why they don’t do what they really want to do. As you read through them, see if there are any that you can relate to.

1.) Fear—Napoleon Hill cited seven basic human fears in his book, “Think & Grow Rich”.

These fears are: the fear of poverty, fear of criticism, fear of ill health, fear of a loss of love, fear of old age, fear of the loss of liberty and the fear of death.

2.) Ego—The “I already know it all” syndrome.

3.) Psychological reactance—People want to maintain their independence, autonomy and freedom. Therefore, if they feel like their freedom is being denied or suppressed in any way, they will seek to protect it. Unfortunately, sometimes just a perceived threat to their freedom will block the good that they could receive if they would allow others to help.

4.) Conditioning—We’ve all been subjected to our environments and have been influenced to some extent by the thoughts and beliefs of those around us, both positively and negatively. We may have unknowingly internalized some of these negative thought patterns and limiting beliefs which may be preventing us from reaching our full potential.

5.) Poor self-concept—How we see ourselves (our self-concept), is the number one determining factor to the level of success we achieve. We cannot outperform our self-image.

6.) Habit—Many of us are living on auto-pilot, unaware that if we keep doing the same things over and over in the same way, we’re going to get the same results.

7.) Emotional resistance—Many of us are holding onto emotional baggage from prior hurts or feelings of betrayal. The holding on to negative feelings of resentment, jealousy, anger, or revenge will only keep YOU from moving on and achieving the life that you are meant to live.

8.) Lack of a clearly defined goal—When we don’t have a clearly defined goal, we become distracted easily and are subject to the whims of others and outside influences.

If you could relate to any of these common reasons for not doing what you want to do in life, that’s good! Recognition of where your resistance stems from is the first step in change. Now you can take the necessary steps to remove and eliminate the resistance that is preventing you from reaching your goals.

I hope that this information was of value to you. Feel free to comment and let me know if you would like some additional tips or advice on HOW to remove your resistance and achieve anything that you truly desire.
