Thought & the 3 R's of Habit Change by Francis Bills

Updated: Apr 30, 2023

We are continually thinking at all times. As we are thinking, we are producing results of some kind which are the effect of this thinking.

We can never stop thinking but we were provided with the power to choose our thoughts, thereby empowering us to determine the kind of results that we’d like to experience.

Our thoughts (cause) lead to our results (effects) in life. When we change our thoughts for the better, by law, our life changes for the better.

A change in thought precedes a change in our lives. Therefore, to change our results, we must be willing to change our thoughts first.

The importance of understanding that our thoughts are the cause of our results, is knowing that we can now take the necessary steps to change our thoughts and remove our destructive habit patterns.

How do we do this? We do it in the same manner in which we change ANY destructive or unwanted habit. I like to call this manner or method, "The 3 R’s of Habit Change."

R #1) The first R of Habit Change is for RECOGNITION.

In order to change a destructive habit we must first become consciously aware of the habit, to RECOGNIZE it.

This may sound like common sense but many people don’t take the time to figure out what it is that’s preventing them from changing their habits, from changing their behavior and from reaching their goals.

So they continue doing the same thing over and over, hoping to get different results. Many times working harder, faster and longer at the wrong thing.

This is where hiring a coach can be very beneficial to help you identify and recognize what habits need changing and what actions you need to take in order to change your results.

R #2) The second R of Habit Change is for REPLACE.

In order to change a destructive habit or destructive thought, we must REPLACE the habit or thought.

We cannot think two thoughts at the same time, therefore whenever we begin to entertain any destructive, dis-empowering thoughts, we must REPLACE these thoughts with their polar opposites; constructive, empowering thoughts.

For example, if there's a thought of fear, you can replace it with faith, if it's a thought of disease, you can replace it with thoughts of health, and if you’re having thoughts of lack and limitation, you can replace those thoughts with abundance and plenty.

Here is a great practical exercise that you can use immediately to eliminate negative thoughts:

Every time you find yourself entertaining a negative thought, stop the thought immediately by visualizing a STOP sign or a director's block and say to yourself, "STOP!", "CUT!", or "NEXT!".

Then, replace the negative thought with a constructive thought or begin to move into a constructive activity.

This exercise will re-program your mind to remove unwanted and non-constructive thoughts. After some time, with practice and repetition, it will become second nature to eliminate any destructive thought.

This isn’t denying reality or playing make-believe. This is making the decision to consciously choose the thoughts that will provide you with a happy, healthy and wealthy life and allow you to maintain your overall well-being. Your outside world will reflect what you are thinking and feeling within.

R #3) The third and final R of Habit Change is for REPETITION.

In order to permanently change a habit or mindset, you must continuously repeat the new, constructive habit or thought pattern that you've chosen to replace the old, destructive one in the previous step.

In the same way in which you build your muscles, learn a new skill or memorize information, you have the power to change ANY habits that aren't serving you well, including your negative thought patterns and limited beliefs.

Over time, through the use of repetition, dis-empowering and limiting thoughts will be removed and your mind will be filled with empowering, abundant and life-enhancing thoughts and beliefs.

The RESULT? Anything you want.

Remember: What we put our focus, attention and energy towards, with feeling, will be magnified and expanded. When we keep our thoughts focused upon that which is good, we will bring into our lives all that is good.
